Jerome “Jerry” Murphy Ewen, 84 of Rochester, passed away on November 7, 2019 at Samaritan Bethany Nursing Care. Jerry was born on September 28, 1935, to Gerald and Lucy (Murphy) Ewen in Dubuque, Iowa. On October 15, 1955, he married Kay Marie Wussow. They had three children, Michael, Jennifer and Douglas.
Jerry spent his early childhood in Iowa but the family eventually moved to Rochester. He spent the remainder of his life in Rochester, attending Lourdes High School but graduating from Rochester High School in 1955. Jerry was an electrician and was employed by Adair Electric. After his retirement from Adair, Jerry also worked for R & S Transport as a driver and CSC Towing as a dispatcher. Jerry and Kay enjoyed camping, starting out with tents when the children were young. Later they owned various motor homes and would often take friends with them on trips throughout the US. They wintered in the Southwest for many years, often with relatives. In their later years they had permanent sites in the Whitewater area. Jerry was an avid trout fisherman and enjoyed fishing in the Whitewater River Valley and in Montana on the Big Horn River with his son Mike and grandson, Scott. He also enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Soldier’s Field Mens Club for many years. He was a regular at his grandchildren’s school and extracurricular activities.
Jerry cared for Kay who had Alzheimer’s Disease in their home for more than a decade. After Jerry had a fall in December of 2017, Kay went to Cottagewood Senior Communities in Rochester. After his recovery, Jerry lived briefly at Meadow Lakes Assisted Living and Stewartville Assisted Living before moving to Samaritan Bethany in March of 2018, where he resided until his death.
Jerry is survived by sons; Michael (Barbara) of Rochester, MN, Douglas of St. Peter, MN and four grandchildren, Scott Ewen of Seoul, South Korea, Trisha (Alex) Russell of Stewartville, MN, Mina Lein of Minneapolis, MN and Lonzo McHenry of Lake City, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Kay (7/24/2019) and his daughter, Jennifer Ewen.
A visitation will begin at 11:00AM with a lunch served at noon on November 12, 2019 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home in Rochester.
Memorials are preferred to Samaritan Bethany Nursing Home.
