Our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, and Friend, Evangeline Bernice Minnie, Smith-Tieman (Eva), passed away on Thursday, May 20, 2021. She peacefully passed away surrounded by her children. She was truly loved and will be missed by many!
A life of love and legacy began with the birth of Eva on October 15, 1931, in Deronda, WI (located near Lincoln, WI). She was the eighth of nine children born to Frank Robert Smith (Schmidt) and Nellie Dale Smith (Miller). She grew up in Morristown, MN and graduated from Morristown High School in 1949. During her high school years she worked at the local cafe where she waited on Earl B. Tieman who would become her future husband. Following high school, Eva moved to Rochester MN and worked as a Nurses Aide at St. Mary’s Hospital.
She went on to marry Earl on March 28, 1950, at Morristown Baptist Church, followed by a second Celebration of Marriage at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, MN. They made their home in Rochester, Minnesota. Eva was a longtime member of St Francis Catholic Church and was an active member of St Judes Rosary Society. While continuing to raise a family she was also involved with the Minnesota Twins Club (now MN Mother’s of Multiples), and the Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC).
Eva most enjoyed being a mother and homemaker. She loved talking about her 15 children. She loved cooking and collecting recipes, sewing, reading, writing, playing both cards and scrabble or putting together a challenging puzzle. She especially loved baking! Her giving nature, supplied many with cloverleaf buns, pies or cinnamon rolls! She was a good friend to all! When her children were grown and off to school, the house was simply too quiet. Her remedy was to start doing home daycare which continued for almost 20 years!
Eva was married for 50 years to Earl, until his death in 2001. She is survived by 13 children – four, sons: Joseph Tieman (Wendy) of Asheville NC, Daniel Tieman (Da), Andrew Tieman (Amphone), and Paul Tieman, all of Rochester. She is also survived by nine daughters: Dawn Hardtke of Littleton CO, Pamela Nelson (Bill) of Rochester, Jill Tieman of Asheville NC, Joy Bailey (Ross) of Rochester, Sandra Tieman (Charlie) of Castle Rock, CO, Teresa Hanson (Peter) of St Paul, MN, Wendy Peavler (Robert) of Cary, NC, Amy Tieman of Rochester. and Brenda Tieman (Lance) of Rochester. She is also survived by 26 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband Earl (2001), and two sons, Richard Tieman (2016), and Allen Tieman (Judy) in 2012.
Eva is also survived by her sisters, Lois Meschke of Northfield, MN, and Jeanette Kuball (Harold) of Morristown, MN. Surviving sisters-in-laws, Rose Smith of Wenatchee, WA, Thelma Smith of Paris, CA, Marilyn Smith of Faribault, MN and Carol Anderson, of Melrose, MN.
There will be visitation on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 from 5-8 p.m. at Macken Funeral Home/River Park Chapel 1105 12th St. SE, Rochester, MN and one hour before the funeral mass. The funeral mass and Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June, 2, 2021 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 1114 3rd St. SE, Rochester, MN with Father Jim Berning officiating. Burial will follow the service at Calvary Cemetery. A luncheon will be served following services at the Eagles, 917 15th Ave SE.
A huge thank you to Eva’s family of caregivers allowing her to stay in her home! Additional thanks and gratitude are extended to Mayo Clinic Doctors, Nurses and staff for mom’s care over the years! We would especially like to thank Seasons Hospice House for exceptional care during her final weeks! It has been a team effort all along! Memorials may be made in Eva’s honor to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church or Ability Building Community (ABC).
