James “Jim” Overkamp, 88, of Rochester, passed away on Monday, August 6, 2018 at Weatherstone Senior Living Home.
Jim was born in Grand Meadow, MN to Edward and Jana Overkamp on August 3, 1930. He graduated from Lourdes High School in 1948.
He married his high school sweetheart. Jeanette Kocer, on June 2, 1951. They were blessed with three children, Jill, Jan, and Joe. They resided in Rochester until 1974 when they moved to the cities. He worked most of his working years in sales.
His favorite job was working for Old Dutch Foods. He was employed by Old Dutch Foods in 1964 as a Southern Minnesota supervisor. In 1974 he was promoted to assistant sales manager and then sales manager.
He was a member of Minnesota Grocers Association and Super Market Research Council. He was named “Man of the Year” by the MN Grocers Association. He retired after 30 years at Old Dutch Foods. He was an avid golfer and won 1st place trophies at Grocer Tournaments. He liked spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking, and traveling.
After retiring, he and Jeanette spent their summers at Carefree Country Club in Big Lake, MN. They spent winters in Arizona, Texas, and Florida. Jim had the rare ability to make everyone around him feel important.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; son, Joe; brother, Gene (Mixie) Overkamp; sister, Doris (Harold) Nord; sons-in-law, Kyle Lacey and John Keena. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette of 67 years, daughters, Jill (Kyle) Lacey and Jana (John) Keena; grandsons, Shane (Lynette) Lacey, Chris Fiegel; granddaughter, Sara (Robb) Scott; great-grandchildren, Taylor Fiegel, Robb Scott, Abbe Lacey, Kylie Lacey, Ethan Van Horn, and Sawyer Van Horn; and one great-great-grandchild, John James “JJ” Bohnen. Jim is also survived by brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the Weatherstone Senior Living and their employees, St. Croix Hospice, Mayo Hospice, and the Palliative Care Team at St. Marys Hospital.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at Church of the Resurrection with Rev. Shawn Haremza officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Rochester.
