Eleanore (Ellie) Katherine Cox, 91 of Rochester died peacefully at Madonna Towers, Thursday, July 5, 2018.
Ellie wan born July 31, 1926 in Wilson, MN to Michael and Katherine Schloegel. She was the oldest of five children. Ellie graduated from Winona High School in 1944. After High School, Ellie worked for Northwestern Bell as a phone operator. She met and married James Cox of St. Charles, MN on May 20, 1948. Together they raised six daughters. In the early years they lived in several towns in southern MN and finally settled in Rochester in 1956. For the next 18 years Ellie worked hard in the home; she was a wonderful seamstress, upholsterer, baker and was also a Girl Scout Leader. Ellie was active in the church at St. Francis and a proud Charter Member of the Church of the Resurrection. She served in the woman’s Alter Guild and Serra Club, daily mass and breakfast with many of their close church friends was a highlight of Ellie’s later years.
In 1967 Ellie resumed her career with Northwestern Bell and retired in 1988 from AT&T. Ellie enjoyed retirement indulging in her hobbies and travels throughout the US particularly Arizona, Oregon and Florida. Two trips to Europe, visiting the Netherlands, Bavaria and Germany where several of Ellie’s family lived were also highlights for Ellie and Jim.
Truly the love of Ellie’s life were her daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed throwing fabulous dinner parties where she always made everyone feel at home. Ever since she was fourteen she was known for her pies. As our dad would say “Girls, no one can make a pie like your mother,” her children and grandchildren would also attest to that fact. In the later years Christmas breakfast was greatly appreciated by her friends.
Her loving hugs and words of encouragement and hours of playing dominoes will be missed by those who call her Mom, Grandma and GGma.
Ellie is survived by her daughters, Connie (Reid) Pederson, Cindy Cox, Cheryl (Bill) Canfield, Cathy (Mark) Sparks, Celeste (Ron) Hanson, and Carin Cox; thirteen grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren; her brother, John Schloegel; her sisters, Imy Weimerskirch, Berniece (Jerry) Ruhoff; and sister-in-law, Ione Schloegel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; parents, Mike and Katherine Schloegel; and brother, Frank Schloegel.
A memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 12th at Church of the Resurrection with Father Peter Schuster officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. A luncheon will follow in the Church hall. Eleanore will be laid to rest at Fort Snelling Cemetery in St. Paul next to her husband, Jim, at a private internment.
