Randall J. “Randy” Alexander, 66 of Rochester, MN died March 7, 2025 peacefully at home with his wife by his side, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Randy was born July 22, 1958 in Rochester to David and Alyce (Ivers) Alexander. He graduated from Mayo High School in 1976. He attended University of MN Duluth and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business in 1980. Randy married his soulmate Rene Ruth Thompson on June 30, 1984. Together they raised their two sons in Rochester in the home that Randy built for the family.

Randy worked for Alexander & Sons Builders, learning the trade from his father and grandfather, building custom homes, and later taking over the business with his brother Jim.

He was a member and past Master of Masonic Lodge #21, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite, Osman Shrine, and Rochester Shrine Cycle Patrol. He spent many weekends riding motorcycles in parades to raise money for Shriners Children’s Twin Cities.

Randy was a devoted youth hockey coach for many years alongside his two sons. He was a mentor to many youth players and enjoyed playing men’s league hockey himself, where he made lifelong friendships.

Randy enjoyed many years of deer hunting on the Thompson family farm with his wife’s family and his boys. Woodworking and crafting were lifelong passions along with gardening and helping make salsa for family and friends. He loved the sport of fishing from a very young age and shared this love with his family while fishing in Canada, on Lake Mille Lacs, and especially on the Mississippi River, where their cabin resides. This cabin was a special place for several generations of Alexander family members to enjoy the river and fishing.

Randy was the moral compass and voice of reason for many. He had a strong faith in God and anticipated seeing those who had gone before him, especially his dog Aimee, in heaven.

He is survived by his wife Rene, sons Ross (Austin) Alexander of Comstock, MN, Roy Alexander of Fargo, ND, grand-daughter Adelynn Alexander of Fargo, ND, parents David (Alyce) Alexander of Rochester, sister Nancy (Dave Strain) Doughty of Rochester, brother Jim Alexander of Rochester, sister Beth (Rob) Knutson of Pillager, MN, brother-in-law David (Jean) Thompson, sisters-in-law Roxanne (Mike) Maristuen, Rebecca (Tom) Thompson, many nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews and friends.

The family prefers memorials in Randy’s name to Shriners Children’s Twin Cities or Mayo Clinic Cancer Research.

The memorial service for Randy will be held on Sunday, March 16, 2025 at 1:00PM in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home. Visitation will be held starting one hour prior to the service at the chapel. A luncheon is planned immediately following in the adjacent River Park Reception Hall.

An invitation to wear a fishing-themed shirt in memory of Randy is extended to all who attend.
