Dennis “Denny” Huselid was born on March 5, 1937, in Graceville, Minnesota to Edgar and Elda Huselid. He was raised on family farms in Clinton and Red Wing, graduating from Red Wing High School where he met his future wife, Marion Arndt. After high school, Denny joined the US Air Force and served as a radar operator in Alaska and Florida.
Dennis and Marion wed in 1960 at The Little Brown Church in Iowa. A few years later, they moved to Rochester to start their family, and Dennis began his 34-year career with Northwestern Bell. Together, Dennis and Marion raised four daughters.
Denny’s retirement dream was realized when he started a part-time job as a groundskeeper at Soldier’s Field Golf Course. This second career lasted over 20 years, provided him with lasting friendships, and kept him supplied with a steady stream of golf balls for his (very impressive) collection. Soldier’s Field Golf Course was a place near and dear to Denny’s heart.
Always a fan of physical activity, Denny continued to play volleyball, tennis, and golf well into his 70’s and 80’s. He loved driving tractor, coaching softball, doing yard work and the smell of fresh cut grass. He appreciated good books, drinking coffee with his friends, and rehashing the week of sports with his brother, Duane. Denny loved a home-cooked meal, especially ones that included Marion’s homemade bread. He embraced his Norwegian heritage, attended many lutefisk dinners throughout the years, and was a long-term member of Zumbro Lutheran Church. If Denny went missing on a Saturday afternoon, odds were, he could be found tinkering in his garage while listening to sports on staticky AM radio. Denny was a pro at living in the moment and appreciating the simple things in life. There was nothing better than an evening at home with Marion, listening to Almanac, and having their cat, Penny, snoozing on his lap.
Denny was patient and kind, a great listener with a wealth of common sense. He lived to help anyone in need and was just an all-around heck-of-a-nice guy. His proudest achievement was a family that loved him dearly. Dennis is survived by his wife Marion, brother Duane Huselid, daughters Ellen (Magdy Milad), Erin (Dragi Filipovski), Mary Huselid (Phil Tovrea), and Alison (Chris Ehlke); grandchildren Hannah (Alex Greenman), Elizabeth (Garrett White), Mary Milad, Michael Milad, Alex Filipovski, Peter Filipovski, Dennis Filipovski, Henry Ehlke, Milo Ehlke, and great-grandson Jack Greenman. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Bonnie Huselid.
