Gordon Yerigan, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2024, in Rochester, MN, at the age of 87. Born on December 31, 1936, in Madison, SD, Gordon was the son of Emmett and Elaine (McCracken) Yerigan.
A graduate of Central High School (1955) and South Dakota State University (B.S. in Education), Gordon’s professional life was marked by dedicated service at Standard Oil and Bridgeman’s, where he made a lasting impact through his hard work and meticulous nature. His commitment to excellence extended beyond his career; he was known for remarkable ability to build or fix almost anything. Whether it was plumbing, electrical, or woodworking, Gordon’s skills were matched only by his enthusiasm for maintaining a perfectly mowed yard free of weeds.
Gordon married Diann McCool on December 28, 1957, and together they created a loving home for their family. His devotion to his wife and their children was evident in everything he did, from family gatherings to Sunday afternoon visits, to lending a hand on any project. Gordon was extremely proud of his grandchildren and the wonderful people they had become. He loved spending time in the shop with his sons-in-law and treated them as one of his own.
Gordon enjoyed sharing the rich history of his family and the humorous anecdotes involving his siblings, cousins, and uncles. His had a passion for history as well as pheasant hunting, golf, and gatherings with his many longtime friends, where he was known for his engaging conversation and warm smile. His belief in giving back was reflected in his years of donating blood contributing at least 135 times well into his 80s.
Gordon was known for his firm handshake, genuine interest in others, and his ability to make everyone feel valued. His kindness and generosity extended to all who knew him, and he will be remembered fondly for his giving spirit and the way he made each person he encountered feel special.
Despite being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, Gordon chose to forgo treatment and instead embraced the time he had left, a testament to his strength and positive outlook on life. He lived beyond medical expectations and approached his final days with the same grace and dignity that defined his life.
Gordon is survived by his wife Diann; daughters, Ann (Todd) Indykiewicz of Mantorville, MN, Sue (Dave) Seykora of Claremont, MN; grandchildren, Cale (Maggie) Yerigan, Garret (Amie) Yerigan, Leah Seykora, Kate Seykora, Charlie Seykora; great-grandchildren, Lainey, William and Gordon; sister, Marlys (Dan) Mielke and a host of other family and friends. Gordon was preceded in death by his son, Derril; brothers, Norman and Robert and by his parents, Emmett and Elaine. His legacy of love, hard work, and unwavering commitment to family and community will continue to inspire all who knew him.
A memorial mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 6, 2024 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 1315 12th Ave. NW, Rochester. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until time of service. Always looking to help and serve others, Gordon donated his body to scientific research and would encourage people to consider blood and organ donation. Memorial contributions can be made to the family. Gordon was a strong supporter of his children’s passions; therefore, donations will be made in his honor to Pheasants Forever, Minnesota Basset Rescue and English Springer Rescue.
