Rosalie Edith Canfield took her last breath after having the rosary prayed over her with her sister and brother-in-law at her side, on Thursday, January 18, 2024 at Season’s Hospice House in Rochester.
On October 5, 1931, she was born in Cleveland, OH to Sicilian immigrant parents Basil and Fortunada Pintaudi. Their family moved to Rochester when she was eight years old, where her parents established a guesthouse known as the Northwest House. It was located across the street from Rochester Methodist Hospital, where the Charlton North Mayo Building is currently located. Along with her two sisters, she grew up preparing and serving meals to the patients and families staying at the Northwest House. In 1950 she graduated from Lourdes High School where she met the love of her life, William Canfield. They married in 1953 and were blessed with three children. They moved to Wilmington, DE where Bill accepted a job with DuPont Co. In 1963, they returned to Rochester and took over day-to-day operations at the Northwest House. After the sale of the Northwest House, Rosalie worked for JC Penney and for Olmsted County. Faith and family were Rosalie’s first priorities. She was a longstanding member of St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church in Rochester. She was always concerned about others before herself. Even in her later years, she still enjoyed having “everyone over” and rarely forgot to send a birthday or anniversary card to extended family. Bill and Rosalie were former season ticket holders for the Vikings. She remained an avid but frustrated fan like many of us. She and her sisters celebrated their Italian heritage by passing down many recipes to their children and grandchildren. After Bill’s passing in 2007, we knew there would be no one else for Rosalie until she joined Bill in heaven. Rosalie was still sharp and lived independently in her home until her recent health complications. Mom, you will and already are, missed. Thanks for being uniquely you.
Rosalie is survived by her children Bill of Maple Grove, MN, Linda (Jim Thornton) of St. Paul, MN, Mike (Lisa) of Rochester, sisters Phyllis Dandelet of Blooming Prairie, MN, Delores “Dee” (George) Libera of Rochester, grandchildren Kelli, Tony, Anna, John, Sarah, great grandchildren Jack, William, Paxton, Ella, Charlie and Aubree.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband William (2007).
The Memorial Mass for Rosalie will be held on Wednesday, January 31, at 10:30AM at Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Rochester. Visitation will be held starting one hour prior to the Mass, at the church. Burial will be at a later date at St. Agnes Catholic Cemetery, Kellogg, MN.
A special thank-you is extended to Season’s Hospice for their attentive care of Rosalie.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Lourdes William F. Canfield Scholarship Fund.
