Lowell Richard Meyer, 84, passed away peacefully at home on October 12, 2023, on National Farmer’s Day due to complications of Lewy Body Dementia. Thank you, Lowell, for your love of God, community, family, friends and service to our country.
Lowell was born March 24, 1939, to Lucille and Edwin Meyer. He graduated from Rochester High School in 1956. Lowell served in the United States National Guard after graduation. He farmed with his grandfather, father, and brother. In addition to farming, he worked various jobs including 5 years at IBM. Working at IBM made him realize he wanted to be his own boss and pursue dairy and crop farming full time. On August 22, 1965, Lowell married Charlene (Sherry) Johnson, bought the family farm, and started a family.
Lowell milked cows for 38 years, caring for many other animals along the way including raising Golden Retrievers with Sherry, who passed away in 2002. In the fall of 2003, he sold a Golden Retriever puppy to Patti Kirkham. After a week, he called to check on the puppy and asked Patti on a date. They were married in July of 2007.
Along with farming, Lowell enjoyed hunting, large family gatherings, and spending time with friends. He was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church serving as a deacon and achieving golden member recognition. He was known for his kindness, compassion, and quick witted humor including light-hearted pranks, jokes, and surprise visits to the Dairy Queen
He is survived by his wife Patti, 5 children; Michelle (Dave), John, Jennifer, Samantha (Ben), Crystal (Tony), and step-son Matthew (Shari), 15 grandchildren, 1 great grandson, and his brother Harry and two brothers-in-law (Jim and Paul), along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and his faithful dog, Jack. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife Sherry.
Memorials are preferred to Seasons Hospice, Lewy Body Dementia Association, Mayo Clinic, or an animal shelter of your choice.
The family would like to thank Home Instead Senior Care and the many doctors and staff at Mayo Clinic for Lowell’s excellent care, especially Dr. Vella, Dr. Hunt, Dr. Young, and Dr. Kwon.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 21, 2023, in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral home with an hour prior visitation.
