Devon John Edward Van Moer was a loving brother, son, and friend. He passed away suddenly on Monday, January 24, 2022 at the age of 24.
Devon was born on September 11,1997 to Brenda Adam. He and his younger brother, Ethan, entered the foster care system when Devon was 11 years old. Devon and Ethan were fostered by and so very loved by Naomi and Bruce Harner and their children Iveta, Jordan, Grant, Ele, Emily, and Brandon for over a year. In 2007, Naomi’s childhood friend Tammy Van Moer and her husband Greg Van Moer, got to meet Ethan and Devon. Greg and Tammy instantly knew that God had been planning for them to adopt the boys, and so in 2008 brought them into their forever family.
Growing up, one of Devon’s favorite things to do was play games with his brothers and sister. He was always amazing at strategy games like chess and Risk. He was inspired by the guitar, and spent countless hours learning new songs and rifts. Devon learned early on about perseverance and the value of hard work. Besides helping with all the home and outdoor chores on the family’s country acreage, growing up he was the powerhouse working for the family lawn care business with his siblings Ethan, Sydney, and Josiah. Then when he turned 15 he got a job in the produce department at the FareWay grocery store in Stewartville MN, he eventually worked at Target in Rochester, and then HALCON furniture in Stewartville. He had a winning smile, was always quick-witted and the smartest man in every room.
After graduating high school, Devon attended college at Minnesota State University, Mankato for a year, until he decided it wasn’t meant for him. While he took some time to try and figure out what kind of career he was to pursue. He was excited by opportunities in the cruise industry, and moved to North Carolina. He got a job as a waiter on a cruise ship in Hawaii. There he fell in love with the Napali Coast in Hawaii. After some time however, he realized that he needed help and to be with family, he made his way back to Minnesota and was admitted to treatment for drug addiction. He fought so bravely, and persevered, nothing but courage grew from this experience. After treatment, he lived in a sobriety house, where he met many wonderful and supportive friends. He fought bravely and had persevered, and with courage grew from this experience. He used what he learned to lead groups helping others struggling with addiction, and lead others to the source of his strength, Jesus Christ.
As Devon worked hard to defeat these struggles, he was ready to seek a new career. He always had aspirations to be a successful millionaire, and at the age of 23, decided sales was what he wanted to do. He started at Spectrum selling high speed internet. After doing that for 3-4 months, Devon decided insurance was a great match for his skills and interests, and he worked at American Family until the day he passed.
May Devon’s adventurous, and iron-willed nature continue into the afterlife. He will always be remembered through his brothers, sisters, family, friends, and everyone Devon managed to touch in his life.
He is survived by his mom (Tamara Van Moer), his dad (Gregory Van Moer), his siblings (Josiah, Ethan, and Sydney Van Moer) his foster family (Naomi and Bruce Harner and their children), and his bio-mom (Brenda Adam) and half-sister (Kali Hersch).
