Mary Kathryn Schmitt, 78
Mary Kathryn Schmitt, 78 of Rochester, died Thursday Sept. 9, 2021 at St. Mary’s ICU in Rochester, MN surrounded by family.
She was born May 20, 1943 in Port Washington WI to Joe and Amelia Schmelzle. She grew up in Mayville and Oshkosh, WI, where she graduated from Oshkosh high school in 1961.
On June 27, 1964 she married Pat Schmitt at St. Mary’s Catholic church in Oshkosh, WI. The couple lived in Oshkosh until 1969 when they moved to Rochester, MN, where they lived for the remainder of their married life.
After high school Mary worked for Kimberly Clark. Later Mary had a day care business in her home for 11 years. In 1986, Mary purchased and ran the family business, Schmitt Stride Rite shoes in Rochester, MN.
Through the years, Mary enjoyed the outdoors including hunting, fishing, and camping. Mary also was always ready for any opportunity to go shopping. She was especially glad when her daughter-in-law joined the family so she would have someone to go to the mall with.
Mary was a member of Resurrection and Holy Spirit churches in Rochester. At church she was involved with the ‘Celebration’ and ‘Generation’ music groups. She also led the ‘Resurrection 5’ contemporary music group for many years. Mary also established the youth church band at Resurrection, the first of its kind.
Mary is survived by her husband, Pat, of 57 years, her children Michael (Holly) Schmitt, Paul Schmitt, and Terri (Tim) Pickett all of Rochester, MN; 5 grandchildren, Josephine (Brendan), Jay, Robert, Erica, and Bradley; her brother Joe (Pam) Schmelzle of Watoma, WI; along with many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Amelia Schmelzle of Watoma, WI.
The Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 2, 2021 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
