The funeral service for Charles Canfield will be held at 11:00AM, Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Rochester with Pastor Norman Wahl officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00PM to 8:00PM on Friday, January 27 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery.
Charles Joseph Canfield, 84, of Rochester, died peacefully, Tuesday, January 24, 2017.
Chuck was born on March 24, 1932 in Mishawaka, IN to James and Martha (Martens) Canfield. He attended local schools and a graduate of Indiana University. He was a Naval Korean War Veteran. On December 16, 1960, he married Gloria Olson in the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. Gloria survives. They resided and raised their family in Rochester.
He served on the Rochester City Council representing Ward 2 beginning in 1986. He was elected Mayor of Rochester for two terms, serving from 1996 - 2003. As a local businessman, he owned and operated an A&W Root Beer business as well as Shakey’s Pizza in Rochester and Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Gloria; four children, Alison (Howard) Markham of Rochester, Michele (Timothy) Nelson of Rochester, Martin (Beth) Canfield of Rochester and Jason (Yoon) Canfield of Wheaton, IL; twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one brother, John (Natalie) Canfield of Williamsburg, WV. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Jerzak.
Chuck was a Century Member of the Gamehaven Council and served as President of the League of Minnesota Cities. He was a member of the SCORE organization, Toastmasters and a Rotary Club member, as well as a lifetime Elk member. He served on the Hiawatha Homes Board of Directors and the Board of Directors for Rochester Convention and Visitor Bureau.
Chuck was a loving husband and father.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to either the Gamehaven - Boy Scouts of America or the Boys and Girls Club.
