Dorothy “Irene” Weis passed away peacefully on January 12, 2021 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester at the age of 95.
Dorothy “Irene” Ryan was born on March 27, 1925 in Platte, South Dakota. She attended grade school in St. Peter, Minnesota and graduated from Cleveland High School, Cleveland, MN. After graduation, she attended Northwest Aeronautical Institute and was employed by Northwest Airlines at Holman Airfield, B-24 Bomber Modification, St. Paul, MN. The original “Rosie the Riveter”.
In 1948 Irene graduated from St. Mary’s School of Nursing, Rochester, MN. She was employed as an R.N. at St. Mary’s until her retirement in 1990. Her professional associates honored her with the Karis Award in 1989.
She was a member of St. Marys Alumni Association, St. Gabriel’s CCW, St. Francis of Assisi Parish, and Rochester World Mission. Irene loved nature, especially wildflower and agate hikes and watching birds. She was an accomplished card player (shark!). She had an Irish twinkle in her eye and was loved by all who knew her.
Four daughters survive: Susan Weis, Bishop, CA, Diane Weis, Rochester, MN, Carol Weis (Dave Nicholson), Maple Lake, MN, and Mary (Paul) Nordeen, Walker, MN; grandchild Kory (Abby) Nordeen and great-granddaughter Addie Nordeen.
Irene’s husband, Linus Weis died in April of 2003. Her parents, two brothers and one sister also preceded her in death.
A Private Memorial Mass for Irene will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Rochester. A public celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Memorials are preferred to Rochester Medical Mission (care of Diane Wagner), Quarry Hill Nature Center, or Oxbow Park.
