Dorothy Marshall de Vogel, 90, died October 1, 2020, from Alzheimer’s dementia at River Bend Assisted Living in Rochester, Minn.
Born Dorothy Litchfield Tedeschi in Jersey City, N.J., on Sept. 6, 1930, she was the only child of Bella (Yingling) and John Tedeschi. Since September 2017 she was a Rochester resident, having moved to be closer to her daughter, Katherine Marshall Moore, M.D. and family.
Dorothy graduated from Douglass College of Rutgers University in 1953 with a B.A. in History and was a proud member of Phi Beta Kappa. In 1955, she earned her Master’s in Russian Studies at Columbia University. Dorothy was an intelligence analyst for the federal government in the later 1950’s and 1960’s.
She was introduced to John Housden Lane Marshall on a blind date in Washington, D.C., in February 1957 and they married on Aug. 10, 1957. Dorothy and John had two children, Katherine Louise and John Alexander “Jay”. Dorothy supported John through medical school and his successful career as a psychiatrist in Washington, D.C., and in Knoxville, Tenn., where they made their home beginning in 1971. Dorothy was John’s dedicated caregiver through medical challenges from 1990 until his untimely death on April 23, 1995.
In the early days of America Online (AOL), Dorothy made an improbable connection with Meijert Cornelis de Vogel (Cor) of Almelo, Netherlands. Their friendship developed into a wonderful romance. After clearing immigration hurdles, the couple married on Sept. 25, 1998, and enjoyed almost 19 years of adventure together. They were active members of St. Elizabeth’s Church in Farragut, Tenn., where Dorothy, a talented vocalist, participated in the choir.
Cor preceded Dorothy in death in June 2017.
Survivors include daughter, Katherine (husband Andrew; sons Spencer and Tristan) of Rochester, Minn.; son, Jay (wife Traci; son Hunter) of Decatur, Tenn.; and seven stepchildren and families in the Netherlands.
Katherine and Jay are grateful to their mother for sharing her love of reading, animals (all, but particularly cats and dogs!), nature, birds, music, and art. A celebration of life is anticipated in 2021 at St. Elizabeth’s in Farragut, Tenn. The family expresses gratitude for care by staff of River Bend and Heartland Hospice. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Mayo Clinic Department of Development.
