Martha Kamin, age 94, a colleague of many and friend to all, passed away from heart disease at Charter House on June 26, 2020.

Born in Englewood, New Jersey, Martha received her RN there in 1947 in the Cadet Nurse Program. Martha earned a scholarship to St. Louis University, graduating with her BS in Nursing in 1951. Martha specialized in pediatric surgical nursing, practicing and teaching until her marriage to Dr. Edward Kamin in 1954, following a seven-year courtship.

In the next twenty years of her husband’s military career, seven children were born around the world, each on a different day of the week.

In 1975 the family moved to Rochester, MN where Martha continued her active volunteering, eventually serving as president of St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary, the largest in the world.

Martha volunteered simultaneously in so many Catholic parishes so generously that it was said that half of the pastors were certain that Martha was a member of their own parish. The list of her volunteer activities included The Dorothy Day House, Channel One, St. John’s Womens Council (past president) and The Diocese of Winona Women’s Council.

After retiring to Charter House in 2007 Martha had leading roles in the Charter House Spiritual Care, Bible Study, and Welcome committees. Martha also pioneered the initiation of the ‘No One Need Die Alone’ program.

Martha is survived by her husband, Ed; and their children, Paul, Thomas, Mary, Mark, Anne, Sarah, and Andrew. Their skill and loving care allowed Martha to remain in the comfort of her home until her death. A great joy were her grandchildren, Peter, Olivia, Jakob, Moira, and Miles. A great-grandchild, Stone, was born just three days before Martha’s passing.

Martha’s life was based in faith, her last words being “Thank you” and “It is finished.” The tombstone will read: Beloved Daughter, Wife, Mother, and Saint.

Martha will be interred in a private ceremony at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. The Mass of Christian Burial and A Celebration of Life are planned for a future date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Jeremiah Program https://jeremiahprogram.org/rochester/ or a charity of your choice in Martha’s name.

Cards may be sent to Macken Funeral Home, 1105 12th St. SE Rochester, MN 55904.
